Regular maintenance procedures

We recognise the purchase of a Wool Classics carpet or rug represents a substantial investment; it will also form one of the key components of your interior scheme. During its lifespan, your carpet will be subjected to considerable and sometimes concentrated wear; as well as functionality your carpet will be a key aesthetic feature of your interior for many years to come. To protect this investment, it is important to follow a regular programme of prescribed cleaning and maintenance procedures which will keep your carpet looking and performing at its best. Cleaning at regular intervals, rather than waiting until the carpet becomes heavily soiled, will extend its useable lifespan and a properly maintained carpet will enhance the appearance and atmosphere of all interiors. A well maintained carpet will absorb dirt, airborne dust particles, fumes and noise. Maintaining the natural beauty and inherent benefits of your carpet is easy and Wool Classics has produced easy to use guidelines for various fibre types.

Vacuuming

  • Vacuuming is the simplest and most frequent form of maintenance.
  • Regular and thorough use of a vacuum is an economical and effective way to remove soil and dirt particles before they become embedded in the pile of the carpet.
  • The vacuum cylinder bag or compartment should be kept less than half full for best results and any filters should be changed on a regular basis.
  • We do not recommend that a beater bar or powered brush head vacuum systems are used on carpets made of silk, viscose or linen as they may inflict damage to the fibre structure. The use of a suction only vacuum heads, used on the correct motor setting is an effective way of removing soil and dirt particles from our specialist fibre carpets and rugs.
  • Ensure walkways and areas of more concentrated wear or vacuumed frequently and thoroughly.
  • The occasional use of a suction vacuum of the back of a rug may be beneficial in removing and loosening soil and dirt.

Preventative Measures

  • Place walk off mats at entrances and if possible in doorways where a carpet leads directly off a hard surface. Clean or change these mats on a regular basis to prevent the build up of soil and maintain their efficiency.
  • Regularly change filters in heating and air conditioning systems.
  • If practical, use separate footwear exclusively within the home environment.
  • Do not apply stain repellent or anti-soil treatments.

Interim maintenance

Occasionally more comprehensive cleaning is required to bring back colour and surface appearance. Impregnated absorbent compound – inert powders impregnated with a mixture of cleansing agents and solvents – can be gently brushed into the carpet pile on an interim basis to absorb dirt. The compound powders are removed by vacuuming, in accordance with our guidelines. Always read the manufacturers instructions carefully before using these products, checking they are compatible with the specific fibre type of your carpet or rug. Where the product is compatible, initially carry out a small test, ideally in an inconspicuous location to ensure the product selected does not cause colour migration or pile surface distortion. Where possible, interim maintenance should only be undertaken by a reputable professional carpet cleaner.

Periodic maintenance

Thorough cleaning may be periodically required to remove the deepest soil. Periodic maintenance should be only be undertaken by a reputable professional carpet cleaner, with specialist knowledge relating to the care of silk, viscose or linen carpets. In the case of area rugs, your specialist cleaner may recommend that periodic cleaning is carried out off site. When commissioning a professional carpet cleaner, always check customer references and insurance details.
