Underlays and ancillaries
Benchmark
A key component in a successful installation is the selection of a quality underlay. Working with our suppliers Wool Classics has developed Benchmark RF a wool fibre/rubber combination underlay manufactured from recycled materials to compliment our carpet range.
The benefits of a quality underlay, such as Benchmark RF are as follows:
- Enhances underfoot comfort.
- Supports the carpet to improve long term durability and appearance retention.
- Allows air circulation, letting the carpet breathe.
- Acts as an efficient insulator of heat. (See also section on underfloor heating)
- Absorbs airborne and footfall noise for a quieter environment. (See also section on Acoustic underlays)
- Has excellent flame retarding properties, conforming to BS4790 (See also section on Flame retardant underlays)
- Manufactured from recycled materials that can be further recycled after use making it a very environmentally friendly product.
Project specific underlays
Wool Classics recognises that not every project is the same and in order to offer our customers a wider choice of underlay, specifically to meet local regulations or building specific requirements we provide alternative underlays as follows:
- Thermalay – a low TOG rated underlay where carpet is to be used in conjunction with underfloor heating systems (See section on Underfloor heating)
- Acoustilay – a specialist acoustic underlay tile for use in areas where the suppression of impact sound is a key requirement.
- Flame Retardant Underlay – we can source a range of flame retardant underlay qualities that conform to a wide variety of international standards.
Underfloor Heating
The use of underfloor heating is becoming more widespread and carpet is very often installed over sub-floors containing these systems. Carpet is a very efficient insulator of heat (and sound) and accordingly, specific consideration must be given when installing carpet in conjunction with underfloor heating so as not to impair the efficient performance of the system. Wool Classics publishes thermal resistance results for the majority of their stock line ranges and the relevant value must be passed on to the heating engineer. We always recommend carpet is installed over an underlay, which is to the benefit of the carpet and underfoot comfort. However, as with carpet, underlay is a good insulator and therefore compromises may have to be made, reducing the recommended underlay quality to ensure the heating system functions efficiently when covered by the combination of carpet and underlay.
